List of known eruptions in Grímsfjall volcano and connected volcanoes

Here is an list of eruptions in Grímsfjall volcano and Þórðarhyrna volcano based on data from Global Volcanism Program and documented eruptions. In most cases, eruptions that took place in the early 10 to 16th century are poorly documented if they where smaller eruptions. This even goes on somewhat into the 20th century.

This is just short overview of the eruptions that have taken place in Grímsfjall volcano and in Þórðarhyrna volcano. It does not contain a lot of details on them. Please not that this blog post might contains errors. If you see them. Please comment on them and I am going to fix them soon as I can.

    The 1783 eruption is though to have coincided with the Laki eruption. Northern Europe was affected.

    Twin earthquakes in western Norway today. 3.2 and 3.3 magnitude. I personally felt the last one – it lasted for maybe 20 seconds.

    The weird thing is that the scientists claim that they’re [i]NOT[/i] related to eachother since they’re seperate fault lines.

      Doesn’t look much like weather to me, and still going now. Maybe glitch, there should be some other sort of clue by now if something else. Maybe?

    I though Grimsvotn was at least a VEI4 in last eruption in 2011. This judging from several things: the volume of tephra (around 0.7 cu km), the size of plume (up to 22km in first hours).

    The eruption was significantly larger than Eyjafjallajokull which was rated as a VEI4.
    Because of this, and its remote location, I think most Grimsvotn eruptions are underrated.

    The eruptions that i find interesting recently are Gjálp in Vatnajokull 1996.

    Shortly after it erupted cracks begin to form in the highland at Sprengisandur.

    Also Fimmvorduhals was unusual, and the quakes recently between Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, over Fimmvorduhals and in the ones Veidivotn area.

    I thought initially it could be weather (tremor at SAU), but based on the data gathered during the night I’d say now it must be either due to human activity nearby or a sensor fault.

    Of the 3 fissures, Laki, belonging to Grimsfjall is the smallest one.
    The reason for the damage it did last time it erupted was the length of the eruption.

    If Veidivotn, the largest one, belonging to the volcano Bardarbunga who also happens to sit right on top of the Mantle plume would erupt, i think the consequences would most likely be similar or worse.

    I find this Mantle plume interesting, its believed to be at least 400 km deep, some scientists think it may even be 2900 km deep, reaching all the way to the Core.
    There are a few things that support this theory, like absence of erupted material commonly found in the upper part of the Mantle.

    Its Icelandic Peridotite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peridotite

    Interestingly Peridotite has never been found in Iceland.
    Jules Verne brings special attention to this in the story, one of many mysteries no one can answer.
