Weather warning for Iceland 30-December-2015

The weather forecast for Iceland on 30-December-2015 is looking really bad. The worst weather is going to be in eastern Iceland and possibly in western Iceland. It is not known where the worst wind is going to be exactly, but it is going to be real bad weather in eastern Iceland. UK Met Office has named this storm Frank, news about it can be found here (BBC Weather). The main risk is strong wind and rain.

This storm is also going to create a major problems in Faroe Islands and in the general area around Iceland.

The storm system low in hPa. Images are from this blog here (in Icelandic).

I’m going to update this article as needed if everything goes bad when the storm arrives in Iceland on 30-December-2015.

Update 1

There was a storm in east Iceland yesterday. Creating a flood and snow-mud slides. One of those mud slides took out one SIL station.

The SIL station at Aðalból is now off-line due to mud-flood in that area. The image above shows when the mud-slide hits the SIL station and damages or destroys it. Copyright of this image belongs to Iceland Met Office.

Image of the mud-slide can be found here. Washington Post has news article about this storm and it can be read here.

Flight delays should be expect according to FlightRadar24.

Update 2

Eastern part of Iceland got hit bad in this weather. North Iceland (eastern and western) are next going to be hit with this weather, it is not going to be as bad as in eastern Iceland. Mudslides also fell, damaging roads and creating other issues. Flooding was also a major problem in eastern Iceland. Some road damage has happened, but I don’t know the extent of at the moment. The lowest air pressure measured was 930 hPa according to Iceland Met Office.

I hope everyone in Iceland and the Faroë islands stay save!
December 2015 is the first december since the dutch Met. office started (1901) writing down observations, without any frost at all!

Stay safe in the coming storm!
Looks like the same places in England & Scotland will be hit by this storm Frank as has been the way for most of the other named storms! (amber warnings for some)
Looks like Somerset will pretty much escape again (no doubt the UK Government will throw some money at the resulting problems, give out some soundbites & hope it goes away!).

  3. Jack McIlveen says:

Ok I love reading about these things but this was a bit to close for comfort:

PS VIII – III is so V tell your anti spam test to smarten, up you ask in roman numerals we should be able to answer in the same!!

    • You can forward that idea to the creator of the anti-spam plugin. If you don’t want to type in the anti-spam question you can register as a user. Since registered users don’t have to answer the anti-spam question.

      • Jack McIlveen says:

I will do that but I just thought it was funny that when I answered the question asked in Roman with Roman it told me to retry, lol

  4. WurzelDave says:

Well although we didn’t get it as bad as others the wind has dropped considerably, still raining… we’ve had about an inch so far.
    How are others fairing?

    • East Iceland got hit bad. See update that I just wrote for more details.

      • WurzelDave says:

Just had a look Jon, used translate (which was interesting) to get an idea of the news story.
Read earlier the jetstream could move further south over the next few days, chance for another storm start of next week… my area could get the brunt of it! Time will tell.

      • There is talk of some storm next week, but it’s too early to know if they are going to be just normal or just something extremely bad.

  5. Jonas Nilsson says:

Bardarbunga got one e.q. upgrade to 3.0. More energy again. The old lady is turning in sleep a little one can see from von, god, etc. Maybe something will happen next year.
